Lavandula stoechas and Lavandula peduncalata

(often called Spanish lavender)

This family of lavenders has a very pungent fragrance so cultivars are generally grown for ornamental or hedging purposes. They begin flowering in September and usually have a repeat flowering period in late January. They will enhance any spring garden with their lovely, colourful flowers.

Unlike L.angustifolia, L intermedia and L. dentata this family is relatively short-lived. Prune lightly after the first early spring flowering and more vigorously after summer flowering. They can live for approximately 3-4 years before going ‘woody’. New growth tends to come from the top rather than the bottom of the plant.

The flower spikes are topped by long ‘ ears’ (sterile bracts) in a wide range of colours.
